Welcome to the Sunderland Jewish Community Online, possibly the fastest growing Jewish community in the UK. The aim is to provide a place on the web where people with roots in and ties to the Sunderland Jewish Community, irrespective of their affiliation and level of observance, can make/renew contact. There is no membership fee and no obligation attached to membership. Please feel free to contribute to the various blogs and do post photographs in our ever expanding albums. From time to time we may write to you by e-mail to update you as to developments on the site, but otherwise you will not be contacted and your details will not be passed on to third parties. Membership and the contents of message boards are monitored to ensure that high standards of civility are maintained, and to make the site a warm and welcoming place. We are eager to expand our numbers so please tell others who you think may be interested in our site, or if you prefer send me their e-mail addresses and I will send them an invitation to join. i remember as a child rhope road shul its a shame most of the jewish population left sunderland there were beautiful homes in alexandra road i lived on richard avenue anyone remember the families wolfson monty, george and al the topazes are spread out all over the world now the second and third generations
I forgot to mention in my last post that there is also supposed to be a Share family connection to the Lotinga family in Sunderland, and particularly the family of Aaron and Leah Lotinga (children Oscar, Adolphus, Henry, Phillip, Ernest, Fred John, Walter and Hilda). The name Share was Scherksne (spelt various wasy in Latvia/Lithuiania). I believe Aaron Share spent some early years in, and was perhaps born, in Klykoliai. His parents were Jossel and Tzilla Scherksne but I suspect his mother died early - I don't know her maiden name.

Regards

I am trying to contact Anthony and Elizabeth Wortman. I was in touch with them about five years ago but unfortunately I have somehow deleted their email address. I know at that time they had a dress shop in Sunderland. My email address is annamolen@ymail.com Is there any way you can put me in touch with them.

Hi, I came across some pictures of Ayres Quay Cemetery on Flickr and heard mention that people were going in to tidy it up. I would love to come over and lend a hand, does anyone know who is organising that, or maybe it was an old post I read as it wasn't dated. I have many relatives in Ayres Quay.

Hi. I have discovered the grave of my great-grand-mother at the Hartlepool Jewish Cemetery and I understand from the records that her grave doesn’t have a stone. I would be very grateful if anyone could advise me on who I could contact to have a stone erected. My contact details are dave_cowan@hotmail.com. Many thanks. David

Hi , My name is Raveena Marks and father Harold Levy grew up in Sunderland. His parents were Annie and David Levy and his older sister was Ruth. I would love anyone to give me ANY information about them as my son is doing a school project, a Biography of my dad, and unfortunatley he passed away when I was young child. He was friends with Malcolm Isaacs and Harold Davis. Please email on
brmarks@optsunet.com.au if you have any info. I would be very grateful for this. We live in Sydney.

It is with great regret, that I let all who knew him, that Max Braunold passed away on Friday 25th March 2011. He was buried in Zichron Yaakov yesterday, 27th March . The middle son of dear Reverend & Mrs. Joseph Braunold. Mourned deeply by his brothers David & Michael, widow Gillian, daughter & sons.
We grew up together from Class 1 in Commercial Road Junior School & Ryhope Road Shool Cheder & through Bede Grammar & Comprehensive School. From the age of 14 -18, we jointly ran the Local Bnei Akiva Snif. We both went to Bnei Akiva Hachshara Program at Kibbutz Lavi 1980-81. On return to England, we went to study in London. We remained close friends until our paths parted in 1976, when I came on Aliya to Israel.
Greatly mourned by all who knew him.

Eric Wiseberg. Maale Levona near Ariel, Israel.

I believe my Gt Grandfather Joseph Cohen came through Sunderland. His sister Rose married Myer Lazar in Sunderland in 1881 and they had a son, Ephraim, who is mentioned in Arnold Levy's book "History of the Sunderland Jewish Community". Rose gave her fathers name as Elias Finkelberg on her wedding record; there are three other Finkelberg sisters who married in Sunderland around the same time, two of them also gave their fathers name as Elias Finkelberg. One of these, Gertrude Finkelberg, married Simon Lazarus and migrated to Australia. Rose, Myer and Ephraim Lazar arrived in Australia in 1883 but Myer and Ephraim died within a short time of arrival. On both their death certificates Simon Lazarus is the informant, further proving the link between Rose and Gertrude. I have reason to believe Rose and Joseph Cohen were born in Kibart Lithuania. Anyone who has information on how to access Kibart vital records, or if you believe you are related to any of the people I have mentioned, please contact me: my webpage is www.archibaldcurrie.page.tl or email me at cathandsteve@comcen.com.au

My grandfather came from Sunderland. His name was Simeon Aaron Matthews. He was a Russian citizen and emigrated to South Africa about 1903. He married Bina (Bessie) Bell (Berl) from Gateshead. Does anyone have information on either side of the family?
